Pause for a blank stare. "That's nice of you to say. Yes, I am [air quotes] 'on' right now."
when I ask Suzanne if I look alright.
"Yeah, really great," she says. "Why?"

She's quick: one glance behind her and she says, "Oh, I get it," and then offers to buy him a beer on my behalf.
