And now, an amusing anecdote:
So, with all that happened yesterday, my dad comes over today to tell me his family's alright (they live in that area, if you recall). Then he tells me his car was hit. By a tree. While he was driving to work. A little tree decided to fall on him! It made a little dent on his hood (he drives a bigass suburban), but a tree! fell on him! we laughed about it for a good 10 minutes, which was nice. to laugh.
i know exactly how you feel about people not caring because it didn't affect them directly, EVEN THOUGH IT FUCKING DID! i guess it makes a difference when you have everyone from madeira emailing everyone telling them that they're alright, even though they saw the towers collapse, even though they have parents who work in the pentagon, even though someone's parents friend had a wife on the plane that crashed the pentagon, even though someone in their dorm collapsed when they saw the towers fall because his parents work there. they're dead now. Even though we may go to war. Even though Nora (remember her? cute little girl from kuwait?) had to take town her kuwaiti flag and has been told to stay in her room for fear of stupid americans hurting her. even though i've heard of people getting beat up because they look middle-eastern. even though true americans who are arabic by descent are ashamed of their heritage now. even though when this happened in the 40s and 50s, we had japanese interment camps and people still dont' really realize that's pure racism and even then, they don't really care. Even though my friend called my yesterday all sad because she had seen her exboyfriend (they went out for 2 months and broke up 3 months ago) with another girl and hung up when i told her in the big scheme of things, with everything going on, it didn't matter. Even though she wrote on her web page that i don't care about anything.
But I do fucking care! I care that thousands, THOUSANDS of mothers, fathers, children who didn't do ANYTHING, died for NO REASON! I care that 266 people aboard 4 flights went through hours of hell, knowing they were about to die and that they were going to take a lot of people down with them. I care that more people are going to die before this is resolved, and some of those people will be innocent too, but there's no other way becaues our world is That Fucked Up. I care that 2 middle-easterners were arrested in florida on the circumstantial evidence that (a) they're middle-eastern, (b) they were in flight school, and (c) the moved out of their apartment yesterday. Yes, that is pretty suspicious,but we don't even know FOR SURE that this is middle-east related.
But people are selfish. If this doesn't affect them directly, it didn't REALLY happen, now did it? I'm so thankful to hear that your family is ok, and just to let you know, everyone from madeira and their families are fine too. it doesn't make up for much, but it's something, right? and you know how much i love you and how much i wish i could be there to bash ignorant people's faces in (woo hoo!) and to support you. and i know how amazingly strong you are and that, while september does suck, i'll always be here for you. i love you!!!!! love, morgan
